In my previous post on Freedom from PCOS, we learned about my challenges with allopathic PCOS medication and how my life was going to the shadows thanks to the symptom-centric medications. One of the reasons why I decided to get off medication was that my gynae was more interested in handling my symptoms than she was in managing PCOS. All through my life, I have visited 5 different gynaecologists, all focusing on the same approach of managing symptoms. Eventually, the root cause outlives the symptoms and you face infertility issues.
Life after leaving PCOS medication behind
It was really tough, mentally. I was scared if I had taken the right decision. After all, you don’t want to play around when it comes to your reproductive health. However, there were some problems that started waning as soon as I got off medication.
Firstly, my acne was gone.
I had a small booming business to take care of and my brain fogged condition wasn’t helping me much.
I was feeling less brain fogged. This is condition that I hated the most. As an entrepreneur, you are expected to be mentally alert and active for most part of the day. I had a small booming business to take care of and my brain fogged condition wasn’t helping me much. Sometimes, it was difficult to wake up and at other times I was just strolling through the day like a zombie. However, I was trying very hard everyday to focus on my work and every day was a big struggle for me. As soon as I stopped medication, this brain fogginess was reduced drastically.
I was feeling more energetic and life, as they say, was a little better than the turbulent times I had been through.
My skin had dark, velvety patches on some areas
There were things that had been worse. For example, my skin had dark, velvety patches on some areas (like underarms, neck etc.). This condition has not improved ever since. The patches still exist.
My digestion was not improving by any means. It was sluggish and I was still quite bloated. Also, I had this really puffy look on my face which was creating a problem for my body image as well as self esteem. It was a very tough time I must say. My face was dull. My complexion had suddenly become patchy, dull and lifeless. It was almost like someone took away the light and I was supposed to live in a cold, dark place.
I also gained a miserable amount of weight
After getting off birth control, I also gained a miserable amount of weight. 9.7 kgs to be precise. My diet had barely changed so the weight gain was a surprise to me. After 2-3 months of getting off birth control pills, my hair suddenly started falling and the bloating and weight gain continued relentlessly. They eventually stopped within 5 months but that is enough time to lose more than 2/3rd of your hair and gain stones of weight.
The good samaritan endocrinologist
I learned about an endocrinologist in town and visited him. I was still taking Thyroxin 25 mcg everyday, as soon as I woke up. He ran some tests and suggested that I double my dosage of Thyroxin. I was kinda scared. Was I that sick?
“No”, he said, “if you had taken Thyroxin 50 mcg from the very beginning, your symptoms could have been easily managed by now and most issues would have been gone.”
Within three months, my thyroid levels were normal and have never gone beyond the normal level since. It has been 5 years since i started the doubled dose and about 4 years since I have been totally medication free in case of thyroid. I have gotten tested several times for thyroid since then and my results have always been great. I could not thank him enough. I always thought you had to continue thyroid medication for a lifetime. However, in my case, everything was well managed.
I always thought you had to continue thyroid medication for a lifetime.
You would also be surprised to know that I had an elevated progesterone, estrogen and prolactin level which was easily managed after doubling my thyroid medication. However, I have always had a history of higher testosterone (since I was 9 years old), which has continued since then. No amount of PCOS medication could change this about my body.
There is a lot left to be known about how PCOS can be managed with ease. I have tried some Ayurvedic medication for this process as well as they have so far been good. My activity level is good and I am as alert as ever. My appetite is back to normal and digestion is also fine. However, I have had problems losing weight in the past. Now I am focusing on the most natural and sustainable way to lose weight and improve my diet further. The weight loss by this method is very slow but the results are far more sustainable. Plus, it has helped in managing the quality of my diet as well, without making me starve or focusing on bland food.
I will try to share weight loss, hair loss tips and other advice to help you manage your goals with ease.
